EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. Our Human Resources Department is responsible for delivering high quality HR services to all EMBL personnel of approx. 1900 persons from over 80 nations working at EMBL Headquarters in Heidelberg and its sites across Europe.

We are looking for a motivated student who is interested in gaining experience in HR processes and projects and is excited by the challenge of providing an excellent service in a stimulating international environment. You will be part of the HR Partner Team, responsible for delivering high quality, comprehensive project support as well as supporting the HR Partner Team with administrative tasks in line with internal guidelines and procedures.


Your role


As working student in the HR Partner team, you will have the opportunity to learn about all facets of a modern personnel management while supporting our highly motivated HR Partner team in all aspects of operational and strategic HR management.

You will be involved in the main tasks below:

  • support the HR Partner team in advising line managers on queries according to EMBL staff rules and regulations,
  • preparing and delivering HR presentations (i.e. newcomers presentations, HR general topic presentations),
  • administrative support of the performance management process (end of contract and probation review processes).

Additionally, and in close cooperation with the HR Partners, you will be involved in projects such as:

  • reviewing content and updating the HR intranet presence,
  • reviewing processes, procedures and policies,
  • building the internal knowledge base,
  • performance development review process.

You have


We are looking for a motivated student who wants to pursue a career in Human Resources. As our ideal candidate, you are studying Human Resources management, Public/Business administration or related field.

You are a team player with a strong "hands-on" mentality, analytical and problem-solving skills.  A proactive approach and strong customer orientation are a must. We expect very good organizational and communication skills, high reliability as well as the ability to plan and prioritize your own work programme. Proficiency in MS office applications is required. Very good command of English and German is essential.



You might also have


Previous relevant  experience, ideally gained in an international environment is advantageous. Good social skills and intercultural competence (e.g. through studies, internships abroad). Understanding the digital environment and how to apply technology (including the delivery of HR analytics) in a people context would also be an asset.

What else you need to know


You could support our team on 2-3 days per week (15-20 hours).

This is a six month contract that can be renewed for up to another 6 months, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.

The ideal starting date is as soon as possible.
